Best Characters from Naruto Filler Arcs

Naruto has no shortage of interesting and exotic characters. Filler episodes are no exception for delivering great characters. Below are some of our favorites to come out of anime-only story arcs in Naruto.

Menma Uzumaki

Ever wonder what Naruto would be like if his parents weren’t killed and instead had a stable and loving childhood? Menma gives you a peak into that possibility, but its suprising to discover that the alternate reality version of Naruto is a dark and brooding and has become corrupted by his power.

Raiga Kurosuki

Raiga’s evolution from cruel and tormented killer to supportive and loving guardian might have been shocking, but not as shocking as his lighting-powered swords called Kiba. Raiga’s tragic story arc is a memorable one. Raiga made such an impression that he became the only filler character to ever appear in the manga canon.

Sumaru

Sumaru is a genin that was prominently featured during the Star Guard Mission story arc. Sumaru’s tragic family history leads to some of the most tearjerking moments in the anime series. Plus, who doesn’t like the Mysterious Peacock Method?

Boruto Fillers to Watch and Skip

worth watchingto skip,

  • 1-16 (Academy Entrance Arc ). Recommended . In this arc they will introduce us to the new generation of ninjas, in addition to telling the story of a relevant character for later episodes. We skip episode 16 for being filler.
  • 25-32 (School Trip Arc ). Not recommended . This arc is unnecessary, here they show us the school trip from the ninja academy to Kirigakure. Only this trip will be remembered in episode 182 but with nothing relevant to contribute.
  • 33-38 (Graduation Exams Arc ). Recommended . In this arc they tell us a little about the motivations and expectations of the students for the future, this after becoming ninjas. We skip episode 33 for being filler.
  • 39-42 (Genin Mission Arc ). Recommended . A short arc where they show us the first missions as genins. We skip episode 42 for being filler.
  • 43-50 (Byakuya Gang Arc ). Not recommended . An unnecessary bow with nothing to contribute.
  • 67-70 (Chocho Arc ). Not recommended . An unnecessary bow with nothing to contribute.
  • 71-92 (Mitsuki’s Disappearance Arc). Not recommended . In this arc they tell us about Mitsuki’s internal conflicts, deserting Konoha a bit in the style of Sasuke. Although a well-known character dies in this arc, for this anime it was irrelevant. But this arc would have been fine with fewer episodes, but unfortunately its 22 episodes makes it get boring
  • 93-95 (Naruto Shinden: Family Day ). Recommended . A little nostalgia.
  • 96-105 (Jugo Arc). Recommended . Highly recommended, short and concise bow. We skip episodes 96, 97 and 104 because they are filler.
  • 106-111 (Steam Ninja Scrolls Arc ). Not recommended . Although it tries to reach our hearts by nostalgia, it does not fulfill its objective due to its very poor plot.
  • 112-119 (Konohamaru Arc). Not recommended . This arc is conflicting, since I do not consider it bad, but not good either. You can skip it if you want to advance faster in the story, but if you are already up to date you can see it.
  • 120-126 (One-Tail Escort Arc). Recommended . Arc where Urashiki’s actions begin.
  • 127-140 (Time Slip Arc ). Recommended . Arc where it narrates the travel in time of Boruto and Sasuke to stop Urashiki.
  • 141-156 (Mujina Bandits Arc). Recommended . While this arc is canon, only episodes 148, 149, 150 and 151 are relevant, from 141 to 147 are introductory episodes (canon anime) and from 152 to 156 are filler.
  • 157-? (Kara Actuation Arc). Recommended .  From episode 157 onwards all episodes are canon and canon anime..

Naruto Shippuden Fillers to Watch and Skip

worth watchingto skip

  • 54-71 (Saga Twelve Guardians Ninja ). Recommended . In this filler saga he tells us about Asuma Sarutobi’s past and his time as a member of the Twelve Ninja Guardians. It is also combined with Naruto’s training with the wind element.
  • 89-112 (Saga The Three-Tailed Demon Turtle ). Not recommended . In this filler saga he tells us about the attempts to capture the Sanbi that is the Three-Tailed Beast, which does not happen in the manga, this saga is only to extend the story without telling anything additional.
  • 144-151 (Saga The Activation of the Six Tails ). Recommended . In this filler saga he tells us the story of Utakata, the Jinchuuriki of the Six-Tailed Beast, as there are few episodes it is enjoyable and at the same time we know this character a little.
  • 176-196 (Saga of the Past: The Place of Konoha ). Not recommended . In this filler saga he tells us some memories of Naruto in the past, this while they are rebuilding Konoha, unnecessary and boring episodes.
  • 223-242 (Saga Paradisiaca Life in a Boat ). Not recommended . In this filler saga he narrates the adventures of Naruto while he is on the ship that goes to Turtle Island, simply episodes without relevance and really unnecessary.
  • 257-260 (Saga The Two Predestined ). Not recommended . Compilation of the rivalry between Naruto and Sasuke.
  • 271, 279, 280, 281, 284-289 (Saga The Seven Shinobi Swordsmen). Recommended . These are extra episodes that complement the story, we have characters that in the manga could not appear in battle and in the anime if they had the opportunity.
  • 290-295 (Saga Chikara ). Not recommended . Saga totally unnecessary in the middle of ninja war.
  • 303-320 (Saga The Fourth Great Ninja War — Assailants From Afar). Recommended . These are extra episodes that complement the story, we have characters that in the manga could not appear in battle and in the anime if they had the opportunity.
  • 349-361 (Saga Kakashi: Shadow Of The Anbu Black Ops ). Recommended .  In this filler saga he tells us about Kakashi’s past and his time in the ANBU Special Force, his encounter with Itachi and Yamato.
  • 376, 377, 389, 390 (Single episodes). Not recommended . Simply boring and unnecessary.
  • 394-413 (Saga Naruto’S Back ~The Tracks Of His Friends ). Not recommended .  In this filler saga he tells us the Chunin Exams that occurred while Naruto was training with Jiraiya, a completely unnecessary saga issued in the middle of the Fourth Great Ninja War.
  • 432-450 (Saga Jiraiya’s Shinobi Manual ). Not recommended .  In this filler saga he recounts the novel written by Jiraiya in Tsunade’s dream. Saga issued with the sole purpose of lengthening the story without contributing anything to the series.
  • 460-468 (Saga The Origin of Ninshu — The Souls of Indra and Ashura). Recommended . In this filler saga we extend the story of the Origin of the Ninshu, in the manga this happened practically in one chapter, in the anime they lengthened it leaving the story a bit confusing, but it is enjoyable.
  • 480-484 (Single episodes). Recommended .  Finally, when you finish watching episode 479, which is final, it would be good for you to watch these episodes to generate some nostalgia for the series, in these episodes the relationship of some characters throughout the series is addressed.

Our Guide to Naruto Shippuden Story Arcs

Naruto Shippuden (which means the Hurricane Chronicles) is based on Part II of the Naruto manga series. It began airing in 2007 and spanned an epic decade-long story showing a teen-aged Naruto’s pursuit of Sasuke and his maturation into a powerful shinobi. Canon and anime-only story arcs are almost evenly split, leading to a lot of unique content and stories for its anime audience. Sai, hashirama, kabuto, the tales of a gutsy ninja are all filler arcs that you can skip in the end as you will not be missing any flashbacks. Kakashi hatake, kiba, mecha naruto, minato, neji, moonlit night, orochimaru’s test subject and shisui’s request are all part of the main story.

The Boruto anime series and manga series share a common ancestor due to the manga’s genesis as a continuation of the anime film Boruto: Naruto the Movie. Many of the anime story arcs mirror Boruto’s manga closely, with slight deviations along the way, but still contains its share of filler.

Boruto Story Arc List

  • Academy Entrance Arc (Episodes 1 to 15)
  • Sarada Uchiha Arc (Episodes 17 to 24)
  • School Trip Arc (Episodes 25 to 32)
  • Graduation Exams Arc (Episodes 34 to 37)
  • Genin Mission Arc (Episodes 40 to 42)
  • Byakuya Gang Arc (Episodes 43 to 47)

Our Guide to Naruto Story Arcs

Being 44% filler, Naruto has an abundance of filler story arcs to consume. The series is almost split in half chronologically between canon arcs and filler arcs, with the majority of the filler episodes and arcs appearing in the last half of the series (after episode 135), though there are a handful of filler episodes sprinkled in before that.

Canon Story Arc List

The anime version of Naruto follows along closely with its manga counterpart for the majority of its early run. It can be broken out into 5 distinct canon story arcs, including:

  • Prologue – Land of Waves Escort Mission (Episodes 1 to 19): In the opening arc, Naruto joins Team 7 to complete a mission to the Land of Waves.
  • Chūnin Exams (Episodes 20 to 67): Team 7 enter the Chūnin Exams where they meet new characters, including Orochimaru, Team Guy, the Rookie Nine and the Three Sand Siblings
  • Konoha Crush (Episodes 68 to 80): In this arc, Konohagakure – the hidden leaf village – is attacked and nearly destroyed by Orochimaru and Otogakure and Sunagakure ninja.
  • Search for Tsunade (Episodes 81 to 100): The Akatsuki are introduced as Jiraiya and Orochimaru attempt to recruit Tsunade – one of the world’s best medical-nin.
  • Valley of the End (Episodes 107 to 135): Known as the “Sasuke Recovery Mission” in the manga, this story arc follows the attempts to stop Sasuke Uchiha from joining Orochimaru.

Filler Story Arc List

Due to production delays in the Naruto manga series, it required the anime show runners to create a multitude of short story arcs to fill time. These usually contained Naruto teaming up with others for short missions that didn’t really further the overall narrative, but were entertaining in their own right.

  • Land of Tea Escort Mission (Episodes 102 to 106): Naruto and Team 7 help Idate Morino win a race in the Land of Tea.
  • Land of Rice Fields Investigation Mission (Episodes 136 to 141): Naruto, Sakura, and Jiraiya encounters the Fūma clan while searching for Orochimaru.
  • Mizuki Tracking Mission (Episodes 142 to 147): Naruto helps capture an escaped criminal Mizuki.
  • Bikōchū Search Mission (Episodes 148 to 151): In hopes of finding the Sasuke Uchiha, Naruto and Team 8 look for the bikōchū beetle.
  • Kurosuki Family Removal Mission (Episodes 152 to 157): Naruto and Team Guy encounter and engage with the Kurosuki family.
  • Gosunkugi Capture Mission (Episodes 159 to 160): Naruto, Kiba, and Hinata help Sazanami proclaim his innocence and clear his name.
  • Cursed Warrior Extermination Mission (Episodes 162 to 167): Naruto, Neji, and Tenten travel to the Land of Birds to investigate and deal with a mysterious ghost.

  • Third Great Beast Arc (Episodes 195 to 196): Guy deals with a vengeful Yagura.

Just because an episode is filler, that doesn’t mean you should skip it. Several anime-only episodes provide some additional background to flesh out the overall story arc, while others introduce interesting new characters that make the episodes worth-while.

Here are some of the best Naruto filler episodes that we think you’ll enjoy. WARNING: Spoilers to follow!

Episodes 152 through 157

Known as the Kurosuki Family Removal Mission Arc, these fillers introduce a villain that eventually becomes canon thanks to an un-named nod in the manga series. It’s not often that a filler character makes the leap to canon, which is what makes this filler arc worth your time.
